Green Beret (live at The Church Transmission 64) - arranged by Reyn Ouwehand

Review by NecroPolo, 30/11/2023

This live act is absolutely next level. If you call yourself a C64remix fan, do yourself a favour and watch the complete video. It is also a great tribute to Johannes Bjerregaard who passed last year. I must admit that I started remixing C64 tunes after listening to Reyn's Green Beret live rendition 16 years ago. After all those years, it was great to meet him in person @X2023 where it turned out that he is not only an incredible fellow performer but a really cool guy as well. Than you Reyn for being what you are.

Hades Nebula (Quinque annis post) - arranged by LaLa

Review by NecroPolo, 28/11/2023

Universe and dark matter in their cold cruelty are honest at least. Time to think, re-wire, assemble pieces, process the puzzle of past to prepare. Exactly what I need for the moment. Thanks for the experience.

Do nothing for 3 minutes - arranged by Shogoon

Review by NecroPolo, 27/05/2022

It is amazing how close and also how distant this recording is from the original SID. Part minimalism, part jazz and ambience, the uniqueness of the whole piece leave me astonished. This remix is just a tiny expansion of the original SID, the right amount of stuff added on the right place rather a sublte way, but also it puts everything in a 3D and organic soundscape that makes quite a dramatic effect. Also it reminds me of how jaw-dropping the original SID was already. On a footnote, let me say that it is a pleasure to see such a distinctive styled SID composer coming back to the scene after a decade of aebsence.

R-Type (Doppelganger Summer Remix) - arranged by Lagerfeldt

Review by NecroPolo, 27/07/2013

Time is passing, nice remixes come and go but this one remained 'THE' R-Type remix to me during the years. There are many flavours around but this one still has the best vibe to me. Besides the big picture, it also does so many little things perfectly that makes this track something like a nice rich summer cocktail with an awesome, timeless aftertaste.

Cheers!

Tusker (Into the Heart of Darkness ft. Anna Black) - arranged by K8-bit

Review by NecroPolo, 26/11/2011

Generally, folks take a SID and do something with it and that is a SID remix as a funny definition says. In the case of KateZ, it changes as take a SID and do something DIFFERENT with it. Adding elements of movie score-style complexity and a heavy dose of sound design, listening to her tracks give you a different experience. If you're open for that or not - you decide.

Being an explorer has nothing to do with popularity. It is about breaking the barrier. It's something that has been always here in the C64 scene. This track oozes that message so this attitude is true to the spirit that keeps everyone coming back.

Back to the remix itself, it reminds me a little of old (not necessarily fairy) tales released on phono, telling a story pretty well without using the eyes, stimulatiing the imagination. I miss those times.

Thanks for the time travel! I really appreciate the way this 'tale' is presented.

Newcomer (Symphonic Rework) - arranged by Vincenzo

Review by NecroPolo, 13/09/2011

If you never played the game, the original SID may not ring the bell that much but having the old memories and countless hours spent in The Island back in the time, this remix stimulates the right nerve. Well executed orchestral work reflects the feel of the game. Vincenzo's XXI. Century skills and ears enhanced and refined the old intro tune into an awesome movie-style monumental entrée.

The game itself is one of the longest C64 RPGs ever created, in two levels: one for the gameplay and one for the development curve that is around 20 years (!) in the making

This remix is a wonderful tribute. Standing ovation from me!

Thanatos (dragon's dream mix) - arranged by Martin Dodd

Review by NecroPolo, 13/05/2011

As Hubbard often admitted, he loved to enter Jarre-land quite often to get inspiration from the synth wizard and adopting the pioneering spirit he created wonderful SIDs.

Because of that, Hubbard's tunes in Jarre-isque soundscapes feel to be extremely natural and smooth. Add musical finesse, attention of details and one step beyond the original way of thinking that expands the great base further and spice with classic warm Oxygene synth sounds = you get one of the nicest remixes this year.

For a subjective note, this is my most fav Thanatos remix to date.

Cauldron II (The Witch Who Stepped in Dub) - arranged by Hazel

Review by NecroPolo, 06/02/2011

Damn!

You should have displayed some warning for this one

One of the most powerful SID remixes to date, perfectly executed. When it comes to power and music, I really like to push the pedal to the metal. But man, this one is pushed into the damn tarmac through the chassis, with one slow move…

CityBomber - PsytroniKateZoid remix - arranged by K8-bit

Review by NecroPolo, 21/01/2011

I totally hate to feel some prejudices but having positive ears for both the original SID and Kate Z's stlye I knew that I will love this one even before starting the download

No disappointment, indeed! Nice touch of class on a nice SID. Power. Elegance. Cleverly used SID sounds. Variation. Inspiration. Positive vibes.

Something that can really, really make your day.

Jack The Nipper (Nippy Little Bugger) - arranged by vurtX

Review by NecroPolo, 27/11/2010

It's not in that my head broke off while listening to this one. It's not in that it's one of my fav SIDs ever. It's not that this is a totally fitting crazy, bogged-minded jamming, chaotic rendition.

Maybe it will be too wild to swallow for some but hey - this remix ooooooozes FUN and having that throughout the creation. That's the thing that moves us from point A to point B, right? Now this goes to point M and also some points in between and after.

Green Beret (live at The Church) - arranged by Reyn Ouwehand

Review by NecroPolo, 04/10/2010

This track is still as mind-blowing as it was when I first heard that and this is the most inspiring SID remix I've ever heard. Even more surely it is based on the best idea to date.

Sweet (feat Gibs) - arranged by Mordi

Review by NecroPolo, 04/10/2010

Nice work Maestros

It is a real clash of two personalities, in the good mean. In many aspects, it shows the best of you both: the sensitivity of Mordi and the raw power of Gibs, with a huge respect for the original track. Mordi, this must be one of your most balanced tracks. And Gibs, you have put much more feelings into that than anything I've heard from you. That's what it makes so great for me. It's a fresh breeze of air in the mass of mechanical mixes. That's what outsanding is for.

Great sounds all the way but the guitar solo works a little independently from the rest of the sound texture and slightly too much in-your-face in the mix. Some more ironing that into the mix would make it a little sweeter and compressor is slightly over the top here and there - but that's my only rants, just some odd lines of a perfect painting.

Scroll Machine (5th Dream About Happiness) - arranged by LMan

Review by NecroPolo, 20/05/2010

First I met this tune in game BMX Kids in the highscore section. With all due to respect for Rob Hubbard, this SID for me seriously outshines the well-known digi GO-GO-GO tune, I loaded the game only for 5th Dream and let it loop, later recorded it on tape of course.

For years I did not hear more about Yip but one day I got a disk with the Scroll Machine demo. I was blown away again (his other tunes were stunning as well) and I really appreciated that I did not have to load the BMX game and blow it for getting to hi-score screen as soon as possible

After a big loop, in 2009 '5th Dream' was somewhere at the top of SIDs to be remixed for the album 'rakBIT'. I discovered LMan's remix somewhere around February and immediately removed the tune from the list. For me, there was no reason to remix Scroll Machine anymore. Listening to this highly perfected work I just heard what I wanted to hear.

I enjoyed listening to it much more than working on my remix 'skeleton' of it. It was no reason to continue work with this SID, I just sat back and enjoyed this awesome rendition.

Much time passed but it remained one of my favs even since.

Traveling - arranged by Dekubitussi

Review by NecroPolo, 30/04/2010

C'mon guys, you all have that, so turn on your AGC/masterprocc for this one. I did it and was blown away

Please, listen to the boys and learn the dark secrets of mastering. It will improve all things on the long run. You already have the chops, the idea and style. You just need to power up the sound to the level of the other fine elements.

Besides, I'm really glad that someone took the huge challenge of remixing Kjell's excellent music. Have my respect for that!

They Stole A Million (The Guvnor Mix) - arranged by Martin Dodd

Review by NecroPolo, 08/04/2010

I totally believe in fight with opened helmet approach so I admit if I was wrong

With this remix, that is the case.

I mentioned plastic orchestra in the shout before. Well, as it turned out, the instrument that you can hear here is a real trumpet, supported with synth brass. The layer of plastic orchestra totally tricked my ears. But, why is that important - and why is it important to change the comment?

Because real instruments have souls. They require much time, skill, heart, care and attention. Without all of that, they just make noise and don't sing.

I have a full respect of this. It just deserved a more detailed feedback.

Baboon (Skydive ReMix) - arranged by Chabee

Review by NecroPolo, 04/02/2010

Chabee vs DRAX? Awesomeness!

This remix could both capture the mellow atmosphere of the fine original and added so much to it. For me it feels like adding subtle, elegant and style-correct details and finishing an already nice painting.

Man, I must admit that this is my fav remix from you - and my fav remix in 2010, so far.

Keep releasing fine pieces like this one!

Absence of Faith (Semper Dubito) - arranged by Slaygon

Review by NecroPolo, 16/09/2009

After spending some time with this odd / wonderful track, it is clearly my #1 this year, so far. I will not analyse sound, arrangement, all typical factors - they are okay anyway and this time I really don't feel any need for pointing out my subjective opinion (in objective wrapping) of what is good and wrong with something great.

///… Of course guitar playing blah and midpart blah, bassline blahblah. ///

Considering faith…

It is only a matter of choice.

Just have faith in music. Fuel for your life, cure for your pain. The best lover, the best friend, the best political party, the best religion.

The best yourself.

You must see that if you look back.

Short Circuit 4 (Dischord Disco) - arranged by vurtX

Review by NecroPolo, 27/08/2009

I am sure that this track is the boldest remix on this site. Idea, technical competence and sound all serve one and only purpose: capturing the nature of chaos, without compromises. It remains true to itself and it makes it one of the finest underground tracks around here as it goes a totally opposite direction from the vast majority of remixes that, hidden or obvious, admitted or not, are made to be liked. These end up running the same loops again and again as everyone did before, uncountable times. But mind that: the predictable and monotonous is slow decay and death - the experimental and chaotic is fertile and evolving.
